Unit Title: Editorial Pages-Oil Spill
Grade Level: 7th Grade
Unit Summary:

Students will analyze newspaper editorials and political cartoons as they relate to the BP oil spill. The students will analyze the author’s purpose, author’s argument and the use of persuasive strategies depicting both sides of the argument “to drill or not to drill”. Students will work in specific groups (i.e. BP, fishermen) to research points of view regarding the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico from a certain perspective using the information to “persuade” others by creating an editorial using factual information to argue their points. Their letters will be culminated into an editorial page along with political cartoons using persuasive strategies.
